Kailua-Kona: The Land of Fire and Ice
When you arrive in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii's "Big Island," you can jump in your car rental and start to explore the "Land of Fire and Ice." Travel around the city in your car or join the traffic and head to one of the island's famous black volcanic beaches. The ocean breezes and swaying palms await your arrival.
Immerse Yourself in Hawaiian Culture
Historic Kailua Village, a quaint seaside town that used to be a fishing village, is located only 15 minutes from the city. The main road, Alii Drive, offers a wide variety of shops and restaurants. You can also visit some historical landmarks such as Hulihee Palace and Mokuaikaua Church.
Learn more about Hawaiian culture when you visit one of the two luaus in Kona-Kailua, which are each only about 15 minutes away. You can attend the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau or the Island Breeze Luau. Both have oceanfront views, craft demonstrations and a feast followed by traditional Polynesian music and dance.
Wade in the Water
Drive less than 15 miles north with your car rental and visit Manini’owali Beach at Kua Bay, which is part of Kekaha Kai State Park. The secluded beach is famous for its sea turtles, but it's also a great place for swimming and snorkeling. The area has tropical fish that swim in the coral reefs, making it a great location to try out your underwater camera.
Ring of Fire
When you visit Kailua Kona, spending a day visiting the Mauna Kea volcano summit is a must. It's only about 65 miles from town, but the scenic drive will take you more than an hour and a half. Make a stop at the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy to learn more about the area and enjoy gorgeous views. If it's after dark, spend some time stargazing.
